Is It Good?
BIG BANG ADVENTURES #16 is the old-school, wholesome, Golden Age-inspired type of comic that sits squarely within a comic lover’s happy place. This issue gives readers two shorts, focusing on Thunder Girl, to amaze, delight, and put a smile on your face. Big Bang Comics makes a point to say that their comics are all about fun, and this issue delivers.
The first story, Thunder Girl meets the Thunder Guys, imagines what happens when a trio of bullies gains superpowers similar to Thunder Girl. Ecker and Carlson recreate the nostalgic charm of a small town with pep rallies, bully jocks, and diminutive eggheads with stereotypical perfection. You feel transported to a simpler time and place, and the family-friendly adventure ends with a near-perfect “Happily Ever After.”
The second story, The Curse of the Thunder Kitten, recreates the magical hijinks of a Bewitched episode when Thunder Girl’s transformation goes horribly wrong, thanks to an unfortunately named cat. The setup is amusing, Thunder Girl’s solution is clever, and again, the adventure ends with a near-perfect “Happily Ever After.”
Dhenry and Menor masterfully create an art style that homages the best of Archie and Harvey comics. The character designs are bright and colorful, the action is safe but fun, and the scene transitions flawlessly mimic the comic strips of classic Sunday funnies.
