Was It Good?
BIG BANG ADVENTURES #10 continues the impressive run of anthology comics that borrow inspiration from classic ages with tales to astonish, mystify, and entertain. If you’re a fan of comics stretching back from the era of serials and strips up through the 80s, there’s bound to be something you’ll like here.
The characters and their adventures in this anthology are wholly original to Big Bang, but to be fair, it’s hard to not see these characters are analogs of widely-recognizable characters ala Spider-Man, Superman, and The Flash. The comparisons are unavoidable and uncanny, but that doesn’t make this anthology any less entertaining. You may even, perhaps, think this issue does “Spider-Man” better than any current run of Spider-Man, but we’ll put further comparisons aside for the rest of the review.
Generally, anthologies are a hit-or-miss experience as not all shorts are hits. However, all the shorts in the issue hit the mark in terms of the art quality and storytelling. There’s not a weak link in the bunch, and the results are nostalgically heartwarming. Let’s get to some specifics.
Shutterbug: Public Enemy #1
The amazing Shutterbug’s suit, made of alien technology, has been remotely commandeered to force Shutterbug to steal a precious jewel. Everything about this short (story and art) is excellent, with standout praise going to the art. The hatching and line work is superior and the colors are spectacular.
Ultiman vs. White Diamond
The world’s finest superhero is about to receive a token of appreciation from the city when his super-powered daughter from the future arrives to stop an imminent disaster. Remember when superhero comics were fun, exciting, creative, and filled with twists and turns? You get all that here on top of super (*ahem*) art from Williams
Speed Queen in The Vanishing Crooks
The Speed Queen encounters a gang of crooks who can disappear in the blink of an eye. It’s up to Speed Queen and Doctor Quakely to stop the ethereal gang. This short is a throwback to the classic comic strips of the 30s and 40s with period-accurate costume designs, a whimsical take on the power of science, and a continent-spanning adventure. Throw in a shadowy puppet-master, and this short has all the hallmarks of classic storytelling made for a perfect Saturday afternoon.

Final Thoughts

If you have a fondness for how great comics used to be, you can’t get much better than this.
