Is It Good?
BIG BANG ADVENTURE #20 is the latest adventure starring Big Bang’s Cowled Crusader as he works to keep the citizens safe in a city where its interim mayor is determined to turn everyone against masked heroes. Will a referendum election force masked heroes to work in secret? To what lengths will a crooked mayor go to take back his city from any vigilante that could oppose his quest for power?
These are all great questions and the short answers are “maybe” and “pretty far.” Gary S. Carlson lays out an interesting moral dilemma by setting Knight Watchman/Galahad up as the potential enemy of the people he’s sworn to protect. You can’t punch your way through laws and duly elected officials, so Carlson smartly sets up a worthy challenge for KW.
What’s not so great? A lot happens in this issue, with names dates, new villains popping up assuming new identities, family drama, racial tension, confrontations with the police, bank robberies, murders, and more. It’s a bit too much for a 26-page story, so you feel like the story is rushed, and several scenes don’t get the necessary room to develop. The scenes are written well enough for you to get the gist, but it feels like you’re reading the quick-hit synopses of each scene rather than a full story playing out.
Ron C. Williams’s art is chef’s kiss perfect for a comic homaging the Silver and Bronze Age. William’s figure work is iconically heroic, and Shayne Cui’s coloring is perfect. If you have a soft spot for Silver and Bronze Age comics, you won’t find a better publisher.

BIG BANG ADVENTURE #20 lays out the Knight Watchman’s latest challenge with a complex moral dilemma that finds the city’s political machine turned against him. The potential conflict is intriguing, and the art is glorious. However, there’s too much story and not enough pages, so the issue feels rushed in several spots.
