Is It Good?
Who doesn’t love a good, old-fashioned fight for freedom against oppressors? BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: WARRIORS OF ZANDAR #4 gives you exactly the type of finale this series deserves with page after page of action, twists & turns to keep you on your toes, several wow moments, and a satisfying ending.
The high point in this issue is the non-stop kinetic energy that permeates every page (almost) from start to finish. Once Victory and Tii-laa learn the identity and motivation of the mysterious stranger who rescued them (see the last issue), it’s as if somebody set off a starter pistol and the story goes into a full sprint. To be clear, the issue never feels rushed or hurried, so that’s a sign of good pacing.
The second high point is the clever resolution to the conflict. The Ki-vaas are a passive people, so Victory and her allies are outnumbered by dozens to one. Wolfer works out a believable way for the three to fight their way out of the situation and put an end to the Keelars’ attacks. Rather than solving the problem with pure punching, Wolfer works in a few twists to make it all make sense.
The art is mostly good in this issue. Hesli’s coloring is outstanding, and Jane’s lettering is top-notch. However, Ranaldi’s inks have a few rough spots where the characters are missing a whole lot of detail, resulting in some scenes where the characters look like out-of-focus blobs. The blobby lack of detail isn’t omnipresent, but it crops up enough to be noticeable.

What’s It About?

Catch up on Victory’s capture and the introduction of her “savior” in our BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: WARRIORS OF ZANDAR #3 review.
We begin with Victory and Tii-laa confronting the Ki-vaas who broke them out of their prison cell. His name is Kva-zoh, and he’s the Ki-vaas protector who went missing. Kva-zoh didn’t come to rescue Victory and Tii-laa, but he followed Hucklebuck after their furry friend found him and asked for help. Now, the Ki-vaas have two protectors, and they join forces. Tii-laa and Victory race off to free the other captives, and Kva-zoh fights his way through the Keelars on his way to confront the king.
Victory arrives at the prison cells while Tii-laa holds off the guards. Victory gets the cells open, but the guards mock her because the Ki-vaas never fight for any reason. What the Keelars don’t realize is that Tii-laa’s role as protector comes with more abilities than just superior strength and fighting ability.
We conclude the issue with a revolt, a throne room confrontation, and a lesson about the power of three.

BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: WARRIORS OF ZANDAR #4 is a strong finale to a classic sci-fi adventure. Wolfer’s writing steps on the gas and doesn’t let up with high-energy pacing, solid dialog, plenty of actions, and perfect resolution to the conflict. The art is largely gorgeous. thanks to Hesli’s expert coloring.

What defines a science fiction?
Science fiction is a fictional story that surrounds one or more scientific principles and asks “What if…?” What if we could travel to other worlds? What if aliens exist? What if time travel was possible? Conversely, science fantasy has strong scientific/technological elements but does not center around an extension of one or more scientific principles (e.g. Star Wars).
