Was It Good?

BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: WARRIORS OF ZANDAR #3 turns up the action dial to 11 for a rip-roaring series of battles in the Keelar’s capital city. This issue mixes in plenty of rock ’em, sock ’em fights, a few doses of mystery, and interesting revelations to give the story emotional weight.

Issue #3 is a positive issue overall with no significant down points, but the absolute highlight of the issue is Ranaldi’s art. Most of the issue is focused on fast-paced action, so it’s up to the art team to step up the pace and energy during and between the fight scenes. Thankfully, Ranaldi and company pump up the energy beautifully to deliver rocket-fast punches and kicks, plenty of wow moments from the action, and a few spots of action mixed with humor when Hucklebuck goes on a stealth mission.

The second highlight is story/character development from Wolfer that mixes exposition with intrigue to build out the world of the Go-Vaas. Rather than using Tii-Laa as a plot device to explain Go-Vaas culture, Wolfer wisely uses developments around Tii-Laa to clue readers into what’s going on while adding emotional depth to Tii-Laa’s situation. You’re not told about the Go-Vaas but shown the go-Vaas culture by witnessing Tii-Laa’s predicament.

The smallest of small down points goes to the sheer volume of cultures, tribes, worlds, and customs a reader needs to track to keep everything straight. It can be a lot, and this would be the rare circumstance where jotting down a few notes would help.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

It’s been a minute since we last talked about this series, so refresh your memory with where we left off in our BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: WARRIORS OF ZANDAR #2 review.

We begin with Tii-Laa surrounded by Keelar’s in the chamber where the “gift” is kept. So far, the Keelar’s have treated Victory like a guest, but they quickly turn on her when she lets slip that she’s Tii-Laa’s friend. Soon, Victory, Tii-Laa, and Hucklebuck are in a fight for their lives against Keelars and their venomous Frozahs.

The trio holds it on but is soon captured by overwhelming numbers. They’re taken to a prison cell where the Keelar leader, Korvakos, questions them about their intentions to free the Go-Vaas. Korvakos doesn’t get any answers, so he leaves the prisoners until it’s time for their execution.

We conclude the issue with Tii-Laa’s painful revelation, a Hucklebuck mission, and the arrival of an ally(?).

BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: WARRIORS OF ZANDAR #3 is a fast-paced, action-packed, meaty entry in the mini-series. Wolfer’s writing remains true to the ERB source material while providing a fun action/adventure. Ranaldi, Hesli, and Jane are turning out pristine work with designs and sets that capture the alien spirit of the material while injecting the script with adrenaline-fueled action.

Score: 9/10
