Is It Good?

BATTLE CHASERS #11 takes Garrison’s fight to protect Red Monika up several notches with blistering action, moments of heartbreak, and the one thing every adventure loves to see happen to their characters – a new level of power. Joe Madureira’s adaptation of the hit game gives you everything you want in an adventure comic wrapped around one big “oh, snap” moment on the last page.

When last we left Red Monika and Garrison, Red Monika was getting treatment for her wounds and new clothes at Garrison’s home when the hunters showed up to capture them both. Red Monika and Garrison escaped Garrison’s home and split in different directions to evade capture, but Garrison’s home, and all the memories it contained, went up in flames. Now, a wounded Red Monika encounters a ravenous beast locked onto the scent of her blood while Garrion is left to fight the hunters on his own with his sword, Limbo.

Again, Madureira’s script has everything you’re probably looking for an urgent, white-knuckled battle that leads to a fist-pumping cliffhanger. Through the fight, Garrison sees visions of his deceased wife, Vionna, that layer on grief and motivation to his fight. The hunters taunt Garrison with the damage he caused, compounding Garrison’s grief with regret, and Red Monika shows genuine concern over Garrison’s fate in the midst of her own fight for survival. In other words, Madureira wisely puts the characters through their paces on a physical and emotional level to give the fight more meaning than just a simple battle.

How’s the art? Ludo Lullabi’s power-packed mix of Euro action figure work and Manga-influenced facial acting is nothing short of amazing. Every panel crackles with energy and intent to grab your attention. As if Medureira’s writing wasn’t strong enough, Lullabi’s art elevates the issue even further.

We begin with Red Monika taking refuge by a lonely tree in the forest to tend her wounds and consider how to find/help Garrison. Her wounds have reopened, so she tightens her bandages, but she notices her hasty retreat left a trail of blood. Suddenly, a spiny beast shows itself after following the scent of her blood.

Elsewhere, the hunters corner Garrison and offer a deal – come in quietly and bring in Red Monika for the bounty, and all will be forgiven. Garrison is suddenly assailed by visions of his dearly departed Vionna, forcing him to remember what he’s lost. Garrison answers the offer with a single question, “Who burned down my HOUSE?!?”

We conclude the issue with different perspectives on Garrison’s wedding day, a transfer of ownership, and a power-up.
