Is It Good?
Well, well. Joe Madureira’s action fantasy adventure takes a considerable leap forward in suspense and action in BATTLE CHASERS #10. Filled with heaps of dramatic tension, nuanced plot progression, excellent dialog, and fantastic art, this issue’s a keeper.
When last we left Red Monika, she managed to find refuge with Garrison, creating a conflict in loyalties for the swordsell. Meanwhile, Gully started to find solace under King Vaneer’s protection in the palace while her “brother” remains safely behind bars. Now, Maestro and his hunters sniff out Red Monika’s location, resulting in a nail-biting chase, and Gully’s visit to Nefar challenges her belief in her safety.
Madureira’s script is rich, nuanced, and detailed. Not a single panel is wasted on unnecessary fluff, and the entire reading experience immerses you in the Battle Chaser world right from the first page. What’s even better is the value of this comic. It’s almost double-sized, yet still holds steady at $3.99 retail, so you get a lot of excellent story for your money.
Is there a down point to Madureira’s script? Not really. With a minimum of effort, helped along by two excellent preface pages, any reader can hop into this world at any time and enjoy the ride.
How’s the art? It’s fantastic. Ludo Lullabi knows how to project the characters’ thoughts and feelings through the smallest glances and gestures. Lullabi’s anatomy style is reminiscent of Humberto Ramos (who also contributed one of the variant covers below) with a sharper edge, and it fits this story beautifully.

What’s It About?

We begin with Red Monika contemplating her predicament after waking up in Garrison’s house. She’s grateful her belongings are nearby and intact, so she starts looking through Garrison’s things for something to wear. Garrison enters the room with his typically stoic demeanor and tosses Red Monika some traveling clothes because they need to leave immediately.
Nearby, Maestro and his hunters scan Garrison’s home from a safe distance. It’s clear the hunters will not blindly follow Maestro’s command when Grave charges the house to settle his personal grudge with Garrison. Garrison and Re Monika escape on horse pack when Grave trips over one of Garrison’s explosive booby traps. What follows is a desperate chase to escape.
Elsewhere, Gully visits the now-handless Nefar to demand answers. She can’t accept that Nefar is his older brother, but Nefar won’t concede, and he warns Gully that King Vaneer’s protection is only good as long as he has possession of Gully’s gauntlets. We conclude the issue with a long shot, multiple confrontations, and a smirk of satisfaction.

BATTLE CHASERS #10 forces Garrision and Red Monika to run for their lives from a squad of deadly hunters for a nail-biter of an issue. The story delivers heaps of action laced with dramatic nuance and tension. As a bonus, Lullabi’s art is phenomenal.
