Is It Good?

AWESOMAN #1 is not bad. Not bad at all. This site’s mission is to bring exposure to independent comics and their creators who are worth watching. AWESOMAN #1 exactly fits the kind of creator and property worth watching.

To be clear, this comic doesn’t live up to Marvel or DC Comics’ levels of quality in the art department, so set your expectations accordingly. But there’s a definite diamond under the rough exterior for a few reasons worth mentioning.

First, the story never once gets boring. Tomlinson has a solid sense of pacing and scene transition tempo. Once the story gets going, it doesn’t stop until the final panel.

Second, the humor is… not bad. If it wasn’t obvious from the lead protagonist’s name and the title, this is a Deadpool-esque superhero satire with self-aware jokes and 4th-wall breaks. Not every joke lands, but there are more hits than misses, and the 4th-wall breaks come through a disembodied narrator, freeing up the character to act and react without disrupting the pacing.

Last but not least, the art quality looks like crude sketches, but Tomlinson has a strong sense of slapstick action and facial acting. Honestly, the characters are only a couple of steps above stick figures, but the action is decently choreographed, the character acting is clear, and the panels look generally okay.

As for the down points, you can find flaws at every level. Almost every page is an 8-panel layout, which makes for cramped reading, there’s a little too much dialog and narration, and the art quality is, again, only a few steps above stick figures.

For all the nitpicks, both big and small, the bones are good. With better editing and better art, this issue would be a standout indie project. Keep going, Wylder Tomlinson. You’re doing it!

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Meet Guy Everyman, a typical slacker working at a fast-food taco place in 2039 Los Angeles. On the way home from his latest shift, Guy gets smacked in the face with a meteorite from the sky. In an instant, Guy Everyman is transformed into Awesoman… whether he likes it or not.

A disembodied narrator explains to Guy what happened to him, how his powers work, and why he needs to start acting like a superhero. Unfortunately, Guy isn’t interested in heroics, but an inadvertent demonstration of his powers catches the attention of the LAPD.

We conclude the issue with a cat who might be named Ben, a two-headed snake, and permanence.

Final Thoughts

AWESOMAN #1 is the type of “diamond in the rough” this site was created to find. The art is super rough, and the writing could use a fair bit of editing, but the foundations are solid, the pacing is excellent, and the humor works more than it doesn’t.

Score: 6.5/10
