Is ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #4 Good?
Tony Fleecs puts a strange twist on the already strange love letter to the Army Of Darkness film by giving two Ashs in two timeframes acclimated to two technology upgrades. After four issues, we are still not sure how this mini-series makes sense or where it’s going, but at least this issue has some cool developments.
When last we left Present Ash, he communed with Evil Ash (inside his head) to level set their priorities and kill as many people as possible. Meanwhile, Future Ash learned from holographic Wiseman that the key to getting home is reassembling the lost pages of the Necronomicon. Now, Present Ash convinces a co-worker to tutor him on the wonders of 1993 Internet while Future Ash battles Droidites and Morlocks to recover the missing Necronomicon pages with a new “Zoom Stick.”
In the middle of all this timey wimey chaos, Lady Sheila enlists the help of Wiseman to stop the growing assembly of Deadite Acolytes before they form an army and resurrect Evil Ash.
What’s great about ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #4? Future Ash’s upgrades are, in a word, groovy. He discovers new tech with the help of holographic Wiseman’s help, and he puts the tech to good use almost immediately for fun and games.
What’s not so great about ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #4? Present Ash’s plot is convoluted as all get out, and it’s unclear how any of the subplots fit together. How can Present Ash and Future Ash be in two Times doing two different things at the same time? What does Lady Sheila’s adventure have to do with anything?
There are too many points of confusion Fleecs introduced in the first issue that have yet to be resolved, and the more the story progresses, the more those points create frustration and a disconnect from the main plot if there is one.
How’s the art? Justin Greenwood’s art is a solid fit for the tone of the story. Fleecs’s script is a mix of violent action and humor with a dash of slapstick thrown in, and Greenwood makes the most of each scene through the art.

Check out our ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3 review to find out how Future Ash learned about his new mission.
We begin with Future Ash ripping his way through a crowd of Droidites to get the next Necronomicon page. During the fight, Future Ash learns holographic Wiseman’s helper droids can remotely shut down Droidites, and they can assemble futuristic weapons to take the place of Future Ash’s missing Remington.
In 1993, Present Ash gets a crash course in dial-up modem Internet access, but Evil Ash would rather rip out his co-worker’s tongue. We conclude the issue with Lady Sheila making a discovery, Morlock sex, and a broken mirror.

Final Thoughts

ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #4 has a few cool moments and solid art, but the plot is growing more confusing by the page. The elements that make this mini-series fit within the Army Of Darkness story are present, but the multiple timelines conflict with each other, and the plot lacks focus.
