Analysis of ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #12:
First Impressions:
Army Of Darkness #12 ends the series (almost) with a big, crazy fight on the battlefield in 1300 A.D. England. Not a lot of thought went into the finale, but at this point, an over-focus on action is probably the smart choice. And if you’re wondering why this issue is “almost” the finale, issue #13 is on its way, but we have no clue what it’s about.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left Future Ash in Army of Darkness Forever #11, our hero tricked Evil Present Ash into activating a portal that took the whole kit and kaboodle to the past at the same moment Lady Sheila confronted her undead brother, the Wiseman, and Evil Ash from the past. Now, the fight continues.
In Army Of Darkness #13, Ash blows away the Wiseman with a laser rifle for his deception and his part in trying to summon forth the Kandarian Demon to devour the world. Lady Sheila rushes to Ash’s side in the hope that they’ve won, but it’s not quite that simple. Baby Necronomicon suddenly grew up, and it turns out he’s the world-devourer.
Tony Fleecs picks up from the last issue with gory action and barely-controlled chaos. Of course, Ash is able to overcome any threat with brute force, even when it doesn’t make sense.
Baby Necronomicon tosses soldiers like tissue paper, breathes fire all over the forest, and sucks in the sous from anyone left. Lady Sheila and Ash, however, concoct a plan. If they can smash together all six Necronomicons, three from the past and three from the future, the resultant explosion may put everyone back where they belong. How did Ash come up with this idea? He feels it in his gut.
Yes, you read that right. Ash, much like this maxiseries, is pretty much winging it. There’s not much to critique because there’s nothing to do but watch the random events unfold.
The issue concludes with Ash keeping Little (Big?) Necronomicon busy while Lady Sheila runs around the battlefield collecting the books, a tearful but grateful goodbye, and the end is the beginning of the end.
Overall, Army Of Darkness #12 ends the adventure the only way it could – with crazy, mindless action. The finer points of the series are, unsurprisingly, left unanswered (How did Ash wind up in the future and 1993 at the same time?), but if you bought into how the maxiseries started, you’ll probably enjoy how it ended.
Artwork and Presentation:
Pop Mhan’s art is perfectly fine for the story on display. The characters, as presented, don’t look like the actors, but the focus is all on energetic, wild, crazy action, so a lack of visual connection to the original franchise isn’t going to change anything. This comic has decent art, and that’s enough.

The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
For new readers, this series takes place as a loose continuation of the filmy, Army of Darkness (1993). If you’re a fan of the film, almost all the same characters make an appearance, and all the same time periods are visited.
Final Thoughts:

ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #12 ends the maxiseries adventure with a gonzo battle in Medieval England. Tony Fleecs’s script tossed out continuity and reason a while ago, but the over-the-top focus on action makes up for the lack of cohesion, and the art is perfectly serviceable for the story being told.
