Is It Good?
ARMORCLADS #5 concludes the arc with the second strongest (issue #4 was the best) issue in the series as Lela fights to save Peris while an earth-shattering battle rages on inside the walls of the Citadel. Filled with non-stop action and big wow moments, this is an unusual case of an arc finishing better than it started.
The absolute high point of this issue is the go-for-broke action presented by the entire creative team. Readers are treated to one big wow moment after another as space tethers shatter, space carriers crash, giant space cannons cause astounding feats of destruction, and hordes of aliens lay waste. You can practically hear the noises of chaos on the battlefield on every page.
The only down point, and it’s a minor one, is the weirdly out-of-place prologue that suddenly introduces a metric ton of magic and supernatural elements out of nowhere. This series has a thin patina of legendry about the existence of superpowerful, ancient mechs, but nothing that touches on magic or mysticism. There’s nothing wrong with having magic in your sci-fi, but the way it’s introduced here is jarring for its lack of setup.

What’s It About?

Find out how the battle for the Citadel got started in our ARMORCLADS #4 review.
We begin with a recap of the last issue showing Alphan soldiers attempting a landing to provide reinforcements when their space tether is blown up. The destruction not only destroys their shuttles but also critically damages their carrier ship. The ship starts a slow descent crash and it’s headed right for the center of the battle.
Meanwhile, Peris attempts to escape the locked room below the Citadel and tries to use the ancient gun to blast open the door. Unfortunately, he can’t get it to fire. Luckily, Lela and the Ironclads arrive to break Peris out, and he insists they take the big gun with them.
Above ground, alien bugs join the fight on behalf of the Legionnaires as they seem to be able to control the critters. The forces on both sides of the fight are an uncontrolled mass of conflict with a giant ship headed straight for them. With no time or room for escape, Peris comes up with a plan.
We conclude the issue with big fights, big ships, big booms, and a very weird prologue.

Final Thoughts

ARMORCLADS #5 is a strong conclusion to the arc that leaves the door open for more exploration of this universe. The action is big, loud, and eye-popping, and the conclusion is relatively satisfying.

Do mech suits exist?
Yes, mech suits exist, but not in the way depicted in this comic or in fictional films such as Aliens or Avatar. Real-life mech suits are far smaller exoskeletons used for industrial labor tasks involving heavy lifting. American military research groups are currently testing similar exoskeletons for military applications.
