Is ANOMALIES #5 Good?

ANOMALIES #5 turns the growing world of super teams into a freight train of chaos when the teams converge on the same spot with individual orders, only to find they’re in for a painful setup. Chris Ecker delivers action, tension, and momentum toward a showdown for survival.

Ecker’s script centers on an anomalous (no pun intended) incident on the East Coast, which could be tied to Anomaly activity. When teams from The Project, TAROT, and the Spoilers all converge at the same spot, their rivalries bubble over, but it isn’t long before they figure out their convergence isn’t a coincidence.

If you’re a new reader to this series, this issue throws a small army of characters at you with little setup or context for their rivalries and relationships. Therefore, this issue is not a great jumping-on point. You’ll have a much easier time tracking who’s who if you go back and read the first four issues.

What’s great about ANOMALIES #5? Ecker builds an energetic atmosphere of anticipation when the heroes converge and fight but begin to feel a creeping paranoia that something isn’t right. Once all the Anomalies figure out what’s happening, it may be too late to stop.

What’s not so great about ANOMALIES #5? For the same reason listed above, this issue feels like a lot of chaos if you’re not firmly grounded in who or what are the Anomalies, how they got to this point in their respective teams, and the stakes of their conflict. Once you see the villain who’s responsible for the convergence, you could make a strong guess, but it’s too much to take in for a casual reader.

How’s the art? The art is excellent. Ron Wiliams is a master at capturing the powerful spirit of Bronze Age comics with clean lines, chiseled figures, and dramatic action. As you can see from the preview images, this is a B&W comic, but the strength of the visuals doesn’t drop an ounce due to the lack of color.

Final Thoughts

ANOMALIES #5 escalates the tension and amps up the action when rival teams are baited to converge on one spot for an ambush. Ecker’s script pops with personality and a speedy pace, and Ron Williams’ Bronze Age style is top-notch.

Score: 8/10
