Is It Good?
A LEGACY OF VIOLENCE #6 gives vested readers what they’ve been waiting for – clues and progress on the plot. If you’ve been keeping up on our reviews of this series, you know the one downside has been the lack of plot movement. Admittedly, Bunn masterfully delivers chills and mood, but the story has to get moving at some point. In issue #6, the story starts picking up steam.
When last we left Nick and Cayce, they discussed abandoning the hospital to escape the killer’s game when the killer left a grotesque present at the hospital in the form of men tied together by their own intestines. Now, Cayce is determined to leave, but Nick decides to hold off because he suspects the killings will escalate. Nick’s decision leads to an investigation of the old man’s house (the old man who died a few issues back), where Nick makes a startling discovery.
All things considered, this is one of the best issues in Cullen Bunn’s series. The oppressive atmosphere of dread is still present, and the one kill is enough to unsettle anyone. More importantly, little clues start to fill in the puzzle of the killer’s identity and motivation. We know Nick keeps seeing 731, and Nick knows it’s tied to his past somehow, but Nick now learns the origin of the number and its connection to his family. Mysteries in comics work best when the audience can play along, so the clues in this issue give readers something to work with.
Andrea Mutti’s art is top-notch in this issue as several characters are confronted with a shocking sight, and that shock is reflected perfectly in their facial expressions and gestures. Admittedly, Mutti’s watercolor style is not everyone’s cup of tea, but here, it adds a grimy patina that makes the killer’s actions more unsettling.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our A LEGACY OF VIOLENCE #5 review to witness the horrific present that convinced Cayce to leave.
We begin with Cayce and Nick heading to see Dr. Patel and let him know about their plans to leave the hospital. They find Dr. Patel in a near-catatonic state, and the mutilated patients discovered in the last issue are missing. Dylan arrives to explain a search for the mutilated patients turned up nothing, and Dr. Patle hasn’t spoken for hours.
Cayce tells Dylan her plan to leave, so he offers to relay the message to Monica. Later, Nick changes his mind about leaving immediately because he believes the killer’s exploits will escalate after the doctors abandon the hospital, leaving the townspeople helpless. Instead, Nick decides to find the home of the old man who dies a few issues ago because the old man seemed to know something about 731 before he died.
We conclude the issue with Dylan finding Monica in a compromised position and Nick finding an old photo that explains a lot.
