Was It Good?
A KING’S VENGEANCE #2 is a simple story about a man. A man died, was resurrected, and now will kill everything that gets in his way to stop the evil wizard who murdered him.
For all its simplicity, the entire issue is nothing but pure satisfaction from start to finish because it pits a character against the bad guys/bullies as an unstoppable killing machine, and you get to experience every wretch, thug, and scoundrel brutally get his comeuppance. You might as well rename this comic You Get What You Deserve: The Comic, and revel in all its karmic glory.
A KING’S VENGEANCE #2 works in the same way the original RoboCop works in that there’s no need for deep pathos or complex storytelling. It follows one of the 7 Basic Plot structures (in this case, a Quest) using revenge as a motivator. There’s a lesson for comics writers here. Following a basic plot that adheres to one of the 7 plot categories is as effective as you can get as long as you keep it clean and clear.
Ricq ups the satisfaction levels by using brutal violence to drive the point home with every stab, slash, and blast. The violence is gory, so there’s no confusion over whether or not the king’s opponents are dead. AndRicq’s unusual color selections tone down the shock value without losing any of the impacts of the violence. It’s a little unusual to use flesh tones for blood, but it somehow works here.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
If you don’t recall how the king died, first read our A KING’s VENGEANCE #1 review.
We begin with a lonely pub in the middle of a lonely town when a lone, hooded stranger walks in. The stranger is soon surrounded by a group of Mozdial’s lower-ranked soldiers who don’t take kindly to strangers. The stranger decimates the group in less than a minute and tells the lone survivor to summon their superior officer.
As the stranger sits and waits for more soldiers to come, we begin a flashback. A strange hermit named Crane found the king’s dying body after the end of the last issue and brought him back (more like reassembled and upgraded him). He’s still dead but awake enough, and now unstoppable enough, to carry out his revenge against Mozdial. All Crane wants in return is a small favor when the time comes.
We conclude the issue with the arrival of inhuman soldiers, death, destruction, and mayhem.

A KING’S VENGEANCE #2 is pure karmic carnage from beginning to end. The fights are devastatingly brutal, and you feel pulled along to revel in every second of the king’s quest for revenge. This is the kind of comic where you can’t wait to see what happens next.
