Is It Good?
007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #2 deals with the aftermath of Myrmidon’s ascension as a world power, sending James Bond and Gwendolyn Gann on the run from every government agent, mercenary, and assassin in the world. Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s take on the world’s greatest spy may have just established the greatest threat 007 will ever face.
When last we left Bond and Gann, their off-the-grid life ended when they were tracked down by the current 002 with orders to bring both former agents in, dead or alive. Now, Bond and Gann seek out the help of a retired colleague for help when they learn the world is effectively under Myrmidon’s control, and Fromm wants revenge for the botched Nassar killing.
The key to Johnson’s success in this issue is the monumentally escalating threat from Myrmidon. By the last page, there is nowhere for Bond to run or hide. Myrmidon’s reach outstrips any previous attempts by criminal organizations such as SPECTRE, so Bond is cornered, literally and figuratively. As a self-proclaimed Bond snob, it’s a treat to see a writer give Bond the ultimate challenge that can’t be overcome with excessive charm or a convenient gadget.
The second treat of this issue is Giorgio Spalletta’s slick, gritty, dynamic art. James Bond stories tend to lean slightly into the realm of fantasy, but this version of Bond feels closer to the successful Jason Bourne films with “realistic” fight scenes, grounded spycraft, and cinematic scene transitions.

Check out our 007: FOR KNIG AND COUNTRY #1 review to find out how Bond and Gann were discovered.
We begin with an armed confrontation between James Bond, aka 007, and the current 002. Suddenly, Gwendolyn Gann leaps from the nearest doorway, catching 002 by surprise. The former spies ultimately let 002 live, but the news that Gann is still alive spreads like wildfire throughout the spy community.
Bong and Gann head for Rome, where Gann believes she can find the man who was Q before the current Q took over R&D. Gann hopes her old friend still has his workshop and skills intact enough to give Bond and Gann an advantage.
Unfortunately, Bond and Gann underestimate the lengths to which Frtomm will go hunting Bond down. We conclude the issue with a misplaced phone call, a plea for the truth, and a man cornered.
