Is It Good?

007 #6 takes readers on a thrill ride for the final issue in this arc from Phillip Kennedy Johnson. The action is pulse-pounding, Bond’s odds of success look slim at every turn, and the issue ends with a new status quo for 007 and a surprise twist you won’t see coming.

Those elements are all well and good, but does this issue pay off Bond’s precarious line walking between undercover spy and traitor? Surprisingly yes. We hailed Johnson’s loyalty-straining subplot, which placed Bond in a position where no side is on the right. Now faced to make an impossible choice, Bond makes a play at great personal cost.

Johnson’s story isn’t just good spycraft. It’s good storytelling because there isn’t a simple “Happily Ever After” here. Bond has to live with the consequences of his actions, and those consequences push his life in a new direction, rife with possibilities.

Regarding the art, Finnegan and Kelly turn in a reasonable set of visuals to finish off this first leg of Bond’s story. The panel compositions and layouts are quite good, but Finnegan’s ink blotch style looks a little rougher on the close-ups. It’s good art but not great art.

Check out our 007 #5 review to find out which side Bond is truly on.

We begin with a flashback to a time when Bond and 003 were more intimately involved. Gann knew what she was getting into with Myrmidon, and she proceeded with eyes wide open, knowing she was doing something she believed in.

Now, 007 furiously races down the highway with Nassar in the backseat. Putting all Nassar had done, Bond still intends to save him. After a furious car chase, Bond’s car is disabled. He soon finds himself face-to-face against Rook.

We conclude the issue with a spy-against-cyborg fight for the ages, a Plan B, and the start of more troubles.
